Jessica Stockholder is an American artist born in Seattle in 1959. Her work has developed since the early 1980s through the selection of different materials and objects on the basis of very simple criteria. They must be directly usable, readily available and as economical as possible. Guided by the qualities of the materials and the shapes and colours of the objects, Stockholder succeeds in making them coexist. The artist seeks to impose logic on chaos, unpredictability and disorder inside the composition. This dialogue between qualitatively distinct areas gives her installations a spatial unity that is close to painting. The objects lose their functional identities in transition from the concrete to the abstract.
